Sterling could rot in reserves

Liverpool are prepared to let Raheem Sterling play in the reserves until their fee is reached according to John Cross and David Maddock of the Mirror.

Manchester City have already had two bids rejected for the 20-year-old and are rumoured to be placing a third offer of £40m plus £4m in add-ons, but the Reds are prepared to hang onto Sterling until they receive £50million.

Sterling has already missed two training sessions and has told the club that he does not want to be a part of the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, but Fenway Sports Group are more than happy to wait until City or another club meets their valuation.

The rest of the squad are less than happy with Sterling over the situation, along with owner John Henry, Mike Gordon and Tom Werner.

It looked as though the saga could have reached its end as City believed their bid wouldn’t be turned down by Rodgers, but with the club happy to let Sterling sit in the Under-21s, it could rumble on until January.

It was thought that any move for Christian Benteke would be funded by the sale of Sterling, but it is now believed that the American trio of Warner, Gordon and Henry are happy to swallow the £30million loss for six months.
