Raheem Sterling would be open to being the first player to move from Liverpool to Manchester United since 1938, if recent reports are to be believed.
According to The Guardian, the only obstacle for Sterling is the way that any transfer would be received by both sets of fans, but is still keen to work under United boss Louis van Gaal.
Sterling’s versatility makes him ideal for Van Gaal’s favoured 4-3-3, and the Dutchman is an admirer of the England international.
Memphis Depay, who is a similar player to Sterling, has already made the move to Old Trafford this summer.
Liverpool’s owners are reportedly open to selling one of their most prized assets, United will look to test their resolve with a formal bid over the next few weeks, which is likely to start a bidding war between all interested parties.
With two years remaining on his current deal, and his agent claiming his client will not sign a new deal for any amount of money, this may be the best chance for Liverpool to get a premium price for the 20-year-old.
FSG’s backing of Brendan Rodgers has cast further doubt over Sterling’s future, with reports in the media suggesting he would sign a new deal if Rodgers was removed as manager by the board.
Sterling recently rejected an offer of £100,000 per week to stay at Liverpool, with his sights set on playing Champions League and winning trophies.
