Dominik Szoboszlai matches Mohamed Salah record as “unfortunate” truth emerges

Dominik Szoboszlai’s mantlepiece is getting crowded. In a season where Liverpool have often struggled for consistency, the Hungarian midfielder remains the undisputed heartbeat of the side, picking up his fourth Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month award of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 25-year-old’s February exploits saw him fend off competition from January signing Hugo Ekitike and captain Virgil van Dijk, claiming over a third of the supporters vote. It is a testament to Szoboszlai’s versatility; during a month of tactical reshuffling, the No.8 seamlessly transitioned between his standard midfield engine room and a makeshift right-back role.

In any other year, a player sweeping four out of seven monthly awards would be the spearhead of a title charge. Instead, Szoboszlai’s dominance of the 2025/26 Roll of Honour highlights a sobering truth: he has often been the lone spark in a season that has, at times, been genuinely hard to watch.

A bittersweet stunner

While his month was defined by work rate, it was punctuated by moments of pure technical brilliance. Szoboszlai also secured the club’s Goal of the Month award for his trademark long-range free-kick against Manchester City at Anfield a strike so refined it actually beat his own clinical team goal against Brighton for the top spot.

However, the midfielder remains his own harshest critic. Despite the individual accolades, the shadow of a difficult result against City and a subsequent red card clearly lingers.

“Thank you to them [the supporters] again,” Szoboszlai said upon receiving the trophy at the AXA Training Centre. “Four times is very nice but I just have to keep on going because the season is still long and we have a lot of things to achieve.”

By securing his fourth Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month award of the 2025/26 campaign, the Hungarian has matched the internal club record set by Mohamed Salah during his own superhuman 2024/25 season.

While Salah previously made history as the first player to win the award four times in a single campaign beating his own 2017/18 debut record of three Szoboszlai’s achievement carries a different weight.

In a season where the team’s consistency has often wavered, the No.8 has matched the Egyptian King’s relentless output, proving that his influence on this side is now as statistically undeniable as it is tactically vital.

When pressed on whether the City “screamer” was the personal pick of the bunch, the Hungarian was quick to pivot toward the collective effort.

“It’s a special goal, unfortunately the end of the game didn’t go as we planned. We lost and [I] got the red card, so it wasn’t the best ending. But I’m happy to score a goal like that. But the Brighton one was more of a team goal and I think this is a team sport, so I prefer this one.”

The tactical utility man

Liverpool’s season has been “hard-to-watch” at times, yet Szoboszlai’s willingness to plug gaps has been vital for a squad stretched thin. Whether providing the finishing touch in the FA Cup or assisting Van Dijk against West Ham, his influence is undeniable.

“I’ve played in different positions quite often but I think that’s a positive side of me that I can play in a couple of positions on the pitch,” he noted.

“To be honest, I just want to be on the pitch and help the team and take maybe more responsibility than the last two seasons. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming games and trying to get back on the track where we were [in] the last month.”

With the run-in approaching, Liverpool will need their talismanic No.8 to maintain this Player of the Month pace if they are to salvage their season.
