Van den Berg impresses for Liverpool’s U23s and could become centre-back option

Sepp van den Berg produced an impressive performance for Liverpool’s Under-23s on Monday night, suggesting he could be a centre-back option this season.

The Reds have had a disastrous time of things at the back this season, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees, and Joel Matip also struggling to stay fit.

Van den Berg has become a forgotten man in some ways, having joined from PEC Zwolle in 2019, but he caught the eye on Monday.

The 19-year-old Dutchman played the whole 90 minutes in the U23s’ 1-1 draw away to Everton, with This Is Anfield reporting that he “defended immaculately”.

There is much frustration surrounding the Reds’ lack of January transfer business, considering the need for a centre-back.

It looks as though Jurgen Klopp is going to trust in the options he has until the summer, which is where Van den Berg could come into play.

He has struggled to make a real impact at Anfield so far, making just four first team appearances, but his performance against Everton was promising.

The hope is that he isn’t needed, with Joel Matip staying fit alongside Fabinho, but a run of good form could see him rival the likes of Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams as alternative options.
