Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Lille midfielder Renato Sanches throughout the summer transfer window.
The Reds were expected to sign at least one central midfielder to replace Gini Wijnaldum following the Dutchman’s move to Paris Saint Germain.
Despite numerous possible targets, Jurgen Klopp opted to stick with the options already at his disposal at Anfield.
That may have all changed were it not for an injury suffered by Sanches midway through the transfer window, however.
According to Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida, the 23-year-old ace was heading for Merseyside prior to a knee issue.
Despite the injury, the 30-cap Portugal ace came close to joining Wolves on loan during deadline day before the French club seemingly pulled out.
Sanches played 90 minutes on the opening day of the Ligue 1 season before missing the next three matches with an injury picked up in training.
Once a loanee at Swansea City, the ex-Bayern Munich man catapulted himself back into the public domain with a run of stellar displays during the European Championships.

Valued at £27million and under contract until 2023 in France (Transfermarkt), Liverpool would’ve needed to shell out for the midfielder’s services.
Unfortunately for Sanches, this summer might’ve been an opportunity missed to join Klopp’s squad.
Now holding a rather wretched injury record, it seems unlikely the Reds will return when other targets such as Franck Kessie are made available.
