Virals: Report attempts to explain Liverpool’s quiet summer

Liverpool remained quiet in the transfer window throughout the summer following the early capture of Ibrahima Konate.

Many might’ve expected further additions to the first-team squad, especially having qualified for the UEFA Champions League amidst huge adversity.

The departure of Gini Wijnaldum was expected to spark at least one arrival in midfield, whilst a shortage of attacking depth was touted as another possible area of concern.

However, the club opted to focus on contract renewals for their best players instead, leaving some bewildered by the lack of incomings.

In the aftermath of a chaotic deadline day almost everywhere outside of Anfield, a report from The Athletic, as cited by James Pearce on Twitter has looked at the rationale behind the inactivity.

The report pins much of the inaction on ‘availability and affordability’ of the players likely to be targetted by the Reds this summer.

Pearce also stated a lack of expected ‘big offers’ not materialising for Nat Phillips, Divock Origi and Neco Williams has also setback the transfer plans.

Given the early season promise shown by Harvey Elliott in midfield, many Kopites will be satisfied that the teenager is capable of stepping up to fill Wijnaldum’s boots.

It’s the frontline that perhaps holds the biggest concern, particularly in the wake of Roberto Firmino’s injury – albeit likely to be a short term absence.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will both miss two Premier League fixtures early in 2022, leaving Diogo Jota and Firmino to lead the line with backup from Takumi Minamino and Origi.

Perhaps an early January signing could appease the concerns over attacking depth if Liverpool are still in with a shout of European and domestic glory by then.
