OTD: Liverpool sign legendary striker Ian Rush from Chester FC for £300,000

On this day (28th April) in 1980, Liverpool signed Welsh striker Ian Rush from Chester FC for a fee of £300,000.

The fee at the time would equate to just under £1.2million in todays money – a steal for such a legendary player.

Rush was just 18-years-old when he signed for the club, with him going on to score 346 goals for the Reds…

Rush is a legend of the club and is still the record top scorer for Liverpool.

It’ll be a real challenge to overtake, too, with Steven Gerrard second on 186, just over half the amount.

Mohamed Salah currently sits on 123 goals for the club but it is unlikely he will ever overtake Rush.

Since retiring in 2000, Rush has become an ambassador for the club given his legendary status.

Many younger fans may not know much about Rush and what he did at the club.

However, the man was an absolute goal machine and could easily be recognised as one of the best British strikers of all-time.

The fact that his number of goals for the club is almost untouchable shows just how good he was.

Older Reds fans will remember Rush with great fondness – and we could really do with a poacher like him at the moment.
