Jordan Henderson has been named the new captain of Liverpool Football Club. We thought this would be an apt time to look back at the last five Liverpool captains, including Henderson’s predecessor.
Paul Ince – 1997-1999
Ince did not have the best of times whilst captain of Liverpool as the former Manchester United player endured two trophyless seasons. The midfielder moved to Middlesbrough in 1999.
Jamie Redknapp – 1999-2002
Redknapp’s tenure as captain was marred by a series of injuries but he did help the team force their way back towards the top of the league. In his absence, Robbie Fowler was given the armband.
Robbie Fowler – 2000-2001
The striker was named captain after Redknapp suffered a serious injury. While he started the season below Michael Owen and Emile Heskey in the pecking order, Fowler did chip in with a number of goals as he led the team to one of their most successful seasons. Liverpool completed the treble in 2001 as they won the League Cup, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup.
Sami Hyypia – 2002-2003
The big Finn was the skipper for less than a year but with the armband came a dip in performance levels. When he passed on the responsibility, he rediscovered his form and established himself in the hear t of the defence.
Steven Gerrard – 2003-2015
Gerrard was the captain of the Reds for 12 years and won three major trophies in that time, along with numerous individual awards. He was a player that epitomised the captain tag – a born leader, always driving his players. Many a time he was on hand to rescue Liverpool with a vital goal; think Olympiakos, think AC Milan, think West Ham United.
