  • Florian Wirtz’s father opens up about his son’s difficulties
  • Wirtz has become physically stronger to adjust
  • Far more mature now with the Germany national team

Florian Wirtz’s father has opened up about his son’s ongoing struggles at Liverpool and the ways he has overcome his Anfield difficulties, in a brand-new interview during the international break.

Florian Wirtz‘s inconsistent form at Liverpool across his debut season has often become the talk of the town on Merseyside, with his £116m price tag automatically setting him up for harmful comments if he failed to live up to his hype.

He demanded such a lavish valuation on the back of an exceptional 2024/25 campaign with ex-employers Bayer Leverkusen, with the 22-year-old playmaker collecting 31 goal contributions, in all competitions.

From 40 games for Arne Slot’s men to date, the numbers aren’t quite as breathtaking to look at, with six goals and nine assists next to his name, donning Liverpool red.

He has seemingly begun to settle in, though, with 2026 seeing him collect eight of that ever-growing tally, across games in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

With two goals and two assists under his belt for Germany in the international break, too, it’s clear that Wirtz has now come out the other side of his early Anfield wobbles.

Speaking to RTL/ntv, while Wirtz was starring for Julian Nagelsmann’s men, the hot-and-cold Liverpool number seven’s father opened up about his son’s overall adjustment process to the Premier League, how he has physically adapted, and his mentor role for the Germany national team, despite only being 22 years of age.

Wirtz’s father’s comments

Wirtz’s father has given a fascinating insight into what the 22-year-old has done to ensure his Liverpool career didn’t fully disappear to the wayside.

Indeed, he states that the slick midfielder has now physically adapted to the rigours of the Premier League, after being so used to the demands of the Bundesliga.

He said, when explaining the taxing process of adapting to a new environment: “When you start a new job, you first have to get used to the new colleagues and the new working conditions.

“He is so far along now that he seems to be surviving the adventure.

“That’s what he did for the first few months and you can see it a bit, that he has gained some muscle mass.”

While he was consistently criticised for his no-show performances towards the start of his Reds journey, Wirtz has clearly learned from those struggles, now, as he cuts a far more confident figure on the pitch for Slot’s men.

During Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Galatasaray recently, Wirtz showed both sides of his game – both the skilful and the physical – with an assist collected, while also winning six duels for his team’s cause.

Scoring this screamer on international duty, too, with Germany, the 22-year-old’s belief in his own ability is clearly back.

Wirtz’s father is also very pleased with how much of a shining light his son has become in the international team, as he now becomes a mentor to rising stars entering the senior fold, in Bayern Munich starlet Lennart Karl.

He concluded: “You saw when Lennart Karl came into the game and Florian played very nicely with him.

“That was a welcoming greeting to Lennart. It pleased me very much.

“I believe that’s how you have to do it. You have to integrate everyone and then the team also shows a good performance.”

Nagelsmann and Wirtz have a very good working bond, with the Liverpool number seven opening up, in other interviews, as to the role the 38-year-old manager has had in ensuring his head didn’t drop for too long, when his confidence was at an all-time low.

Slot will hope he can get the very best out of his reinvigorated midfielder when domestic action returns, as Liverpool strives to make a last-minute push into the top four positions in the Premier League.
