Brendan Rodgers has spoken on LFCTV ahead of Sunday’s opening Premier League match against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, the site of May’s humiliating 6-1 defeat.
In the first news conference of the new season, the Reds’ boss covered a range of topics, including the matter of who will be vice-captain this year.
After praising new signing James Milner on his “tireless” work rate, Rodgers made his decision clear:
“He’s got big character. He will be vice-captain.”
This is a meteoric rise for a player who joined on a free transfer only two months ago. Milner has excelled on the pre-season tour of Asia, bringing much needed experience to what is a relatively young side.
On the injury front, light was shed on both Daniel Sturridge and Jon Flanagan:
“He’s (Flanagan) on target to return just before Christmas.”
As for Sturridge:
“He’s looking at being back in early September.”
Christian Benteke was the subject for much of the conference, following his arrival from Aston Villa and his debut goal at Swindon last weekend.
“I think he’s the type of player that fits perfectly for us,” said Rodgers.
“For me, he can play in any type of game. He’s going to be a huge player for us.”
In terms of our objectives for the coming season, the man from Northern Ireland said:
“This season we will look to put up a greater fight. The goal is to arrive in the top four.”
Rodgers also claimed that Champions League qualification via reaching fourth spot is the “first objective”.
He added: “Its been a very good pre-season. Delighted with response of the players coming back.
“They’re all top players, it’s about adapting. From what I’ve seen I’m excited for new season.”
