Liverpool reportedly secure deal for midfielder

Liverpool are set to sign 19-year-old midfielder Marko Grujic, according to Serbian newspaper Mondo.

The publication are claiming that Jurgen Klopp held a telephone conversation with the Red Star Belgrade youngster, and persuaded him to make the switch to Anfield.

Mondo also believe that Liverpool’s assistant manager Željko Buvač informed the club of the player’s ability, and a deal has subsequently been agreed.

As per the report, the Reds will pay a £4.3m fee upfront, but the teenager will remain with his current club – who are a staggering 22 points clear at the top of the Serbian SuperLiga – before joining Liverpool in the summer.

Grujic has featured in 19 of Red Star’s 21 league games this term, registering five goals. The teenager has represented Serbia at all youth levels.

Miodrag Bozovic, manager of Red Star, believes the sale is necessary. “Objectively, only from the sale of players can we work towards the Europa League or the Champions League,” he said.

Should Grujic sign, he will have several other young midfielders to compete with for a place in the side – such as Emre Can, Jordan Rossiter, and the promising Allan Rodrigues de Souza.
