Thierry Henry certainly gave Liverpool a few worries in his time as a player, but the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward paid one of the Reds’ current crop of players a major compliment by saying he’d have liked to have played alongside him.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former French international said he would have enjoyed playing in the same team as Roberto Firmino.
The Brazilian forward was in great form at the weekend as Liverpool defeated Southampton 2-0, grabbing a goal and a wonderful assistant and Henry was full of praise for him.
Asked who stood out in the match at St Mary’s, Henry said:
Firmino, and not for the first time. The way he plays, the way he works. The assist that he had, just everything that he does. That’s why he always plays. This is for me the one. I’ve been in that situation sometimes where you flick the ball and it’s a flick like ‘I hope he gets it, I hope it looks good, oh what a flick’. No. Everything that he did had a meaning. I would have liked to have played with this guy.
Whilst Mohamed Salah is getting a lot of plaudits in the national press for his goalscoring exploits, Firmino has gone a bit under the radar but he too is having a fantastic season and Liverpool fans will be glad to see that finally being recognised.
The fact that it is one of the Premier League’s greatest ever players recognising him will only add to the good feeling around Firmino.
