Asensio insists he never intended to join Liverpool
Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has this week revealed that he never had any intention of leaving the Spanish giants this summer, despite constant links to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, according to the Express.
There had been rumours this summer about a potential £158million move for Asensio to the Reds, though no official bid for the player ended up being made.
Asensio brought about rumours over his future with Real when he said in an interview with GQ last month:
My first option is always to triumph at Real Madrid. After that, you never know what can happen.
After contributing four assists and a goal in Spain’s 6-0 demolition of Croatia earlier this week, Asensio spoke:
I’ve never had the intention to go anywhere.
Asensio signed a six-year contract a year ago with Real with a huge buy-out clause reported to be in the region of £442million.
The starlet started just 30 La Liga matches in two full seasons under Zinedine Zidane, sparking rumours that his future could lie elsewhere.
However, the Spaniard has started all three of Real’s La Liga matches this season under new boss Julen Lopetegui.
Asensio is quoted by AS as saying:
This is my third season, in this one I think I have continuity and more prominence, and I’m seeing the performance I’m doing.
Asensio has so far contributed 21 goals and 15 assists in his 95 appearances for Madrid to date.
