- Dominik Szoboszlai wins POTM for March
- Won nearly 2/3rd of the votes
- Matches Mohamed Salah’s feat
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has edged out Mohamed Salah and Milos Kerkez for the Liverpool Men’s Player of the Month award for March.
Arne Slot’s side did not have the best month in March, winning just two of their six matches across all competitions. However, the Hungarian stood out for his versatility and hard work, playing in four different positions.
The former RB Leipzig man scored in the 1-1 draw to Tottenham, which helped the Reds get their only point from three Premier League matches in the month. He opened the scoring in the 4-0 UEFA Champions League win over Galatasaray at Anfield, helping them come back from 1-0 down on aggregate and progress to the quarterfinals.
The Hungarian played 71 minutes in the FA Cup win over Wolverhampton as a right-back, with Jeremie Frimpong coming off the bench in the second half. The award is now his fifth of the season, after winning it in August, October, November, and February.
Szoboszlai’s future remains in the balance despite Liverpool heroics
Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player this season, scoring 9 goals and assisting 12 in all competitions. His five POTM awards have backed his performances, and the Hungarian has been the lone bright spark at Anfield in this gloomy season.
However, his future at the club remains in the balance, and the midfielder has confirmed that contract talks have not progressed. He will enter the final two years of his current deal this summer, and the 25-year-old is keen to extend his stay.
“As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression. So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go, and I am focusing on that. Of course, I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I’ve said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let’s see.”
The Reds have let the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Ibrahima Konate go down to the wire in recent months, and they should avoid the repeat of it with Szoboszlai.
He has constantly shown why he is a key member of the squad, and with Real Madrid interested, negotiations should be wrapped up swiftly.
Szoboszlai breaks Sadio Mane’s feat
The 25-year-old has joined an elite list of Liverpool players with his fifth Player of the Month award. He has become the third player to win five or more awards in a single season, joining Philippe Coutinho’s five in 2014/15 and Mohamed Salah’s seven in 2017/18.
The award this month is also the versatile star’s seventh at Anfield, overtaking Sadio Mane’s tally of six. The Senegal star is regarded as one of the best players in recent years, and the Hungarian beating his tally shows how he has slowly become the most underrated player in the current squad.
The Reds hierarchy need to do everything possible to ensure he extends his contract at the club and becomes a key member of the core, with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson leaving and Virgil van Dijk entering the final year of his deal.
