Last season, Liverpool’s record after playing in Europe wasn’t great but there was no problem on Saturday afternoon as they dispatched Southampton 3-0 on a comfortable afternoon at Anfield, with all the goals coming in the first half.
An own goal from Wesley Hoedt got the scoring underway before Joel Matip made it 2-0 as he headed home from a corner.
Mohamed Salah made it 3-0 as he tapped home after Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick hit the bar.
Jurgen Klopp made three changes to the side that defeated PSG, with Xherdan Shaqiri, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip replacing James Milner, Daniel Sturridge and Joe Gomez.
The game was over at half-time and the Reds simply strolled around in the second period as they looked to save their legs.
Here’s how we rated the Reds as they remain unbeaten in the League in this campaign.
Alisson Becker - 6
Hardly had to do anything to bar one routine save from Charlie Austin in injury time.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7
Got forward plenty in the first half and his corner-kick led to Joel Matip’s goal. Put in some excellent crosses and wasn’t troubled defensively.
Virgil van Dijk - 8
Made a few very good blocks and interceptions in the first half, mainly due to his excellent positioning. Picked up an injury in the second half and was taken off. Hopefully it’s not too serious.
Joel Matip - 8
Perhaps a surprise inclusion but he proved his worth. He used the ball really well and scored a very good header to make it 2-0. Mopped up everything that came near him.
Andy Robertson - 7
Mr Dependable. A typical Robertson performance, almost capped off with a goal but his dipping volley was just slightly off target.
Gini Wijnaldum - 7
Very busy in the first-half, as per usual. Taken off after 70 minutes for a well deserved rest.
Jordan Henderson - 7
Had a good game, both with and without the ball. Looked to up the tempo on the first half and took things pretty easy in the second.
Xherdan Shaqiri - 7
Made his full debut and impressed. It was his cross that caused the own goal and he was unlucky not to score with his excellent free-kick which led to the third goal. Came off at half-time.
Sadio Mane - 6
Had moments where he sprung to life but was fairly quiet.
Roberto Firmino - 6
Played out wide in the first half and was involved a lot. Played up front in the second half and worked tirelessly as ever but couldn’t quite get his final ball or touch right.
Mohamed Salah - 7
Played as a centre-forward in the first half and was unlucky on a couple of occasions when inside the box, especially with a cheeky back heeled effort. Got another home goal when he tapped home after Shaqiri’s free-kick bounced down off the bar. Went back to the right in the second half and was involved a lot.
(Sub) James Milner - 6
Came on at half-time and had a stroll about. Easy work.
(Sub) Joe Gomez - 8
Came on in the 54th minute due to Van Dijk’s injury. Looked a million dollars.
(Sub) Naby Keita - 6
Klopp brought Keita on to up the tempo but Liverpool had taken the foot off the gas by that stage.
