Zielinski was supposed to sign for Liverpool says Empoli president

Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski was supposed to sign for Liverpool rather than Napoli, according to Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi.

Speaking to Calciomercato, as cited on TalkSPORT, Corsi explains that the player was close to joining the Reds, but opted to move to Napoli at the last minute.

He [Zielinski] was meant to play for Liverpool. When he came to Naples, he had that option, but they did really well to convince him.

Both clubs were interested in signing the player when it became clear that he would be leaving Empoli.

The Reds had kept a close eye on his development after he had impressed in Serie A, but Maurizio Sarri, who had recently left Empoli to move to Naples, came in and took the player with him.

Zielinski remains a target for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have continued to track him since his move to Napoli.

He is very highly thought of in Naples, with the Serie A side in talks to renew his contract in the hope of including a big-money release clause to ward off Premier League interest.
