Liverpool slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
The Reds travelled to Serbia full of confidence following their 4-0 win against Red Star in the reverse fixture but turned in an abject display as they were swept aside.
Daniel Sturridge spurned a chance early on in the first half and Liverpool were made to pay for their mistakes, as Red Star took a two-goal lead before the break.
Milan Pavkov nodded the hosts ahead on his full Champions League debut before extending his side’s lead with a fine strike.
Liverpool pushed to complete an unlikely comeback in the second half and came close on occasions. Andrew Robertson’s deflected ball in came off the crossbar before Mohamed Salah’s effort struck the post.
Ultimately, the Reds were made to pay for missed opportunities and a lack of urgency in the first-half.
Here are our player ratings.
Alisson - 5
Hardly had to do anything. Might have done better with the second goal but it was struck very powerfully from distance.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 3
Hasn’t been in great form recently and did not look good at all once again. Hooked off at half-time.
Joel Matip - 4
If he backed off any more for the second goal he’d have been in the stands! Had a good chance to score from a Gomez throw but mistimed his header.
Virgil van Dijk - 5
A poor header led to the corner for the first goal and he was too reluctant to close down for the second. Didn’t have a lot of defending to do in the second half but the damage was done.
Andrew Robertson - 5
Looked to get forward but his crossing and use of the ball weren’t as good as it usually is.
Georginio Wijnaldum - 3
Should have fouled his man to prevent the second goal. Pretty much anonymous thereafter.
James Milner - 3
A terrible pass led to the second Red Star goal. One of his worst performances in years.
Adam Lallana - 4
Had a decent header cleared as it was going in. However, for each good moment, there was a poor one and he looked well off the pace.
Sadio Mane - 3
Had a very good chance early in the second half but couldn’t get enough on the ball when he really should have done better. His general play wasn’t great either and he summed Liverpool’s night up when he simply dribbled out of play.
Mohamed Salah - 6
Probably the best of a bad bunch in that he had brief moments where he looked dangerous. Unlucky to hit the post and had a few nice touches but nowhere near his devastating best.
Daniel Sturridge - 2
A very poor half. He missed an absolute sitter, his passing wasn’t great and he was too selfish on a couple of occasions when simple passes were available to him. It was no surprise to see him taken off at half-time.
(Sub) Roberto Firmino - 5
Looked lively at times but didn’t see enough of the ball to hurt Red Star.
(Sub) Joe Gomez - 5
Didn’t have to do much defending. His main attribute in attack was his long throw-ins.
(Sub) Divock Origi - 3
Came on for about 15 minutes and looked like he couldn’t trap a bag of cement, never mind a pass.
