Xherdan Shaqiri “proud” to be playing for Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri admits he is “proud” to be a Liverpool player, in an interview with the Liverpool Echo.

The Swiss has been a revelation since his summer move from Stoke City, having arrived as something of a risky purchase.

He scored in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Fulham and his performances have been consistently effective, whether it be from the start or as an impact substitute.

Shaqiri has thanked the fans for their support at the weekend and admits it is an honour to be playing in such a top side:

It’s always nice when you get a standing ovation and the people are behind you.

We have amazing fans and I scored again in front of the Kop so it was a nice feeling.

We have a very good team, a young team, so our process is going very well and I’m just proud to be part of this team. I try to give good performances and pay the coach and the fans back.

You need to be ready to train hard every day. I’m feeling good, I’m fit, and I’m trying to give my best every time I get a chance

Shaqiri has been Liverpool’s most successful summer signing to date, even though Fabinho and Naby Keita arguably have a higher ceiling long-term.

He is pushing to be a regular starter, such are the quality of his displays, and he is performing like someone who knows this is their last chance to shine at a huge club.
