Virgil van Dijk reflects on Liverpool’s “painful” defeat to PSG

Virgil van Dijk has described Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain as “painful”.

The Dutchman was one of a host of Reds players far from their best at Parc des Princes, as their hopes of reaching the knockout stages now hang by a thread.

Speaking after the game, Van Dijk admits the loss hurts and says he could have done more to prevent PSG scoring:

In the end it was a frustrating game. There are certain moments where you need to keep your head cool. It was difficult.

There were good things in the second half but to lose it tonight is painful.

Yes, definitely [I’m disappointed with the goals]. The one I tried to clear, the ball came behind me a little bit and they picked up the second ball.

It should have been better there but everyone sometimes makes mistakes. I need to learn from that.

The second one was on the break – that’s what they’re good at. We need to do better.

Liverpool will now need to beat Napoli either 1-0 or by two clear goals on December 11th, assuming PSG win away to Red Star Belgrade.

The defeat on Wednesday means they have lost every away game in the Champions League this season, which is not a statistic Reds supporters will enjoy reading.

Focus now turns to Sunday’s Merseyside derby at home to Everton, with victory crucial.
