Liverpool continued their march in the Premier League with a pulsating 4-3 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield. In a game that swung back and forth throughout the 90 minutes, goals were flying from all over the place in favour of both teams.
Palace led in the first half after Wilfried Zaha got the better of James Milner in the wide area to set up Andros Townsend who didn’t make any mistake to slot the ball home.
Liverpool equalised seconds after the break when a Virgil van Dijk shot was deflected and fell kindly into the path of Mohamed Salah to manufacture a cool finish. The home side turned the game a few minutes later when a Roberto Firmino shot took a slight deflection to go in towards the far post.
The Eagles got back level though when James Tomkins rose up high from the corner and headed the ball expertly towards the far post. Then a howler from veteran Julian Speroni handed Salah his second goal of the evening.
Sadio Mane looked to have sealed the win in stoppage time with a nice finish, but Max Meyer scored with a minute to go to make it interesting until the final second but in the end, a nervy win was secured by the Reds.
Here’s how we rated the Liverpool players.
Alisson - 6
Could have done with the Meyer shot but it wasn’t easy. His quick thinking allowed Liverpool to score the fourth goal though.
James Milner - 5
Got roasted by Zaha at right-back. However, he was a good outlet in attack. His ball across the box forced Speroni into making a howler. Sent off after getting two yellow cards, the second was unnecessary at best.
Joel Matip - 6
Did well with and without the ball. Should have done better with a headed chance in the first half.
Virgil van Dijk - 6
The Dutchman didn’t do much wrong defensively. His shot was deflected for Salah to score the first equaliser.
Andy Robertson - 6
The Scot played well but wasn’t at his best, probably because his communication with Naby Keita wasn’t there.
Fabinho - 7
The Brazilian played really well with and without the ball. Subbed off late with a knock.
Jordan Henderson - 8
The captain played well and led from the front in a tough game.
Naby Keita - 6
The Guinean tried his best but couldn’t quite make anything happen.
Roberto Firmino - 7
Average first half but came to life in the second half. Scored the goal that gave Liverpool the lead for the first time.
Sadio Mane - 7
Wasn’t at his best but remained a threat throughout. Scored a very good goal late on.
Mohamed Salah - 8
He was a threat all game long and scored a brace. Both goals weren’t pretty but very effective.
(SUB) Xherdan Shaqiri - 5
Came on at 2-2 to change things but with Liverpool preserving the lead few minutes later, he had to track back and defend.
(SUB) Adam Lallana - 5
Had to play in central midfield and just about got the job done later on.
(SUB) Rafa Camacho - N/A
Came on very late and made a crucial late tackle to dispossess Wilfried Zaha.
