Liverpool considering Lonergan deal – a shrewd move?

Liverpool are considering a short-term deal to sign Andy Lonergan on a free transfer this week.

According to The Liverpool Echo, the club are weighing up their options following Alisson’s injury against Norwich on Friday.

The report claims that Lonergan is already training at Melwood and is able to sign a contract with the club – despite the transfer window closing.

With Alisson potentially out for a number of weeks and no experienced options to back up Adrian, Lonergan could provide good cover on the bench.

The 35-year-old went on tour with Liverpool over the summer and did impress with his performance against Sevilla in a friendly, which suggests that he would be a solid enough option should he need to be called upon.

Adrian came off the bench against Norwich and had little to do, aside from picking the ball out of his net after Teemu Pukki’s goal, but has plenty of Premier League experience from his time with West Ham.

Offering Lonergan a short-term deal whilst Alisson is injured would, perhaps, be the ideal move for Liverpool, to avoid a situation where an academy goalkeeper is making his debut in a high-stakes environment.
