Rodgers not “bitter” about Liverpool sacking – will he return to haunt the Reds?

Brendan Rodgers says he is not remotely “bitter” about his sacking as Liverpool manager back in 2015.

The Ulsterman was relieved of his duties after a poor start to the season in 2015/16, with Jurgen Klopp swiftly replacing him.

Rodgers spent three years in the Anfield hot-seat, during which time he came agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title in 2013/14.

In an interview with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher for the Telegraph, Rodgers admits he holds no grudges, revealing he congratulated Klopp and his players after their Champions League triumph:

When I received a phone call from Mike [Gordon, Fenway Sports Group president] on the way home from the Everton game, I understood where it was at.

From their perspective, maybe I could have gone in the summer but they wanted to give me the chance.

It was a tough start to that season and they felt it needed a change. Look, it worked out brilliantly for them. When Liverpool won the Champions League I sent them all a message congratulating them and Jurgen.

I am the type of person who is happy for the club and especially happy for players like Jordan and James Milnerplayers I worked with and had a strong relationship with.

I was so happy for Jordan when he lifted the Champions League trophy because I know how much he has developed and worked for it.

I was never going to be bitter. That’s why I let Jurgen move into my house!

The interview is a fascinating read for any Liverpool fan, perhaps showing Rodgers in a better light than usual.

The Reds made the correct decision in sacking him – they should have got rid of him at the end of the 2014/15 season, in truth – and Klopp has worked wonders in his place.

That being said, Rodgers is a talented manager who is doing an excellent job with Leicester City, taking them to Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Foxes sit third in the Premier League and possess lots of quality, so if Liverpool don’t up their game, they could drop their first league points of the season.

It promises to be the most entertaining Premier League game of the weekend.
