Abraham leaps to defend Gomez after boos by England fans

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has slammed some England fans for booing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Gomez and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling had a heated exchange at St George’s Park earlier this week, which resulted in manager Gareth Southgate dropping Sterling from the England squad for the clash with Montenegro.

The clash between the pair is understood to be the result of an on-field exchange between the pair during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over City at Anfield last weekend.

As quoted on Football London, Abraham said after the 7-0 victory over Montenegro:

We had the incident today with Joe where we are all England players or fans. We need everyone to be together, times like that we need the fans to lift us up and help us really when we are going into tournaments.

We said after the game it was unacceptable we don’t need that really he’s a great player. Things happen in football, things happen between teammates. It’s about dusting yourself down and just moving on. We’ve all moved on from the situation and it’s looking positive.

The England fans booing and jeering Gomez makes absolutely no sense at all. The defender is not the villain and Sterling himself has admitted that.

It is pretty senseless on the part of the small group of fans who behaved in that manner towards Gomez and it made everyone in the squad pretty upset.

He’s one of England’s brightest talents and as Abraham rightly stated, this needs to be forgotten and buried as soon as possible.
