Liverpool forced into immediate interest in Werner

Liverpool have reportedly been forced to move up their plans to swoop for Timo Werner in the summer.

According to The Mirror, Chelsea have opened talks with RB Leipzig over a potential deal, which has made Liverpool reconsider their approach of waiting until the end of the season.

The report claims that Liverpool and Chelsea are now fighting it out to land the forward, who is said to be valued at around £60m by the German giants.

If the interest from Chelsea is genuine, it makes sense for Liverpool to be proactive and actively look to beat them to the punch. If the Reds decided to stick to their initial plan and Chelsea signed him this month, they would be missing out on what appears to be a key target for them.

Werner has scored an incredible 18 goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances for table-toppers Leipzig this season, which is more than any Liverpool player has managed in the Premier League. This suggests that he could add more firepower to Liverpool’s attack, as well as giving Jurgen Klopp the option to rotate his front three and rest Roberto Firmino. This means that Liverpool could then compete on all fronts, rather than having to use the under-23 squad in the cup competitions as often as they do, as he would have more players to work with.
