Pearce provides an exciting update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Werner

It is unlikely that Liverpool would loan Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The 24-year-old has arguably been the Reds’ most heavily-linked summer transfer target, with an exit from Leipzig seemingly on the cards.

There have been rumours suggesting Liverpool could sign Werner, only to loan him back to his current club.

Speaking on The Red Agenda podcast (10/3/20), however, Pearce played down the possibility of that happening.

I’d be surprised if that was true. One of the basics of Liverpool wanting someone like Timo Werner is that next season they’d be losing two of their elite attackers for at least a month, if not six weeks for the African Cup of Nations.

You’ve also got the potential issue of the Olympics if that goes ahead. So it wouldn’t make an awful lot of sense to me.

This is both an exciting update and one that makes perfect sense, considering the issues Liverpool could encounter next season.

As Pearce alludes to, Jurgen Klopp is expected to lose both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, which would leave his attack threadbare without Werner at the club, too.

It could lead to the manager having to call upon the likes of Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster, which I don’t believe is good enough for a team with ambitions to go up another level.

Werner needs to be brought in regardless, however, adding depth and quality to Liverpool’s front-line. He has 27 goals and nine assists this season, showing the ability to could bring to the table.
