Liverpool, football and the postponement conundrum

It was just a matter of two more wins.

Six more points were all that was needed.

30 years of agony was on the verge of being replaced with uncontrollable ecstasy.

Liverpool, the runaway leaders at the top of the Premier League, needed just two more victories in order to be crowned as the Champions of England when the league was suspended.

Football, and all the highs and lows that come with it, have been put on the back burner for the time being as the entire world has come to a halt.

While Liverpool fans around the world would’ve been left disappointed that they’re made to wait to see their team being crowned Champions of England due to suspension of the league, common sense dictates that it was the right thing to do with the world in such turmoil.

As Jurgen Klopp himself said in a letter released by the club, ‘Football always seems the most important of the least important things’. Klopp further said ‘Put your health first. Don’t take any risk. Think about the vulnerable in our society and act where possible with compassion for them.’

It’s been a little over a month since the defending champions Liverpool crashed out of the 2019-20 campaign after suffering a 4-2 loss to Atletico Madrid at home and yet the memories of the match seem a lifetime ago.

The Champions League has also since been suspended and there are reports of the entire Champions League campaign being scrapped, though nothing is confirmed at this point of time.

Additionally, the transfer rumours linking Liverpool to RB Leipzig’s frontman Timo Werner have gone a bit quiet but we can probably expect Liverpool to get back into transfer action once normalcy resumes.

What to expect?

With FIFA having extended the football season indefinitely, and UEFA having postponed the Euros to 2021, we should have the belief that the current Premier League campaign will resume.

The complications arising from declaring the entire league campaign as null and void would cause havoc and could lead to some clubs dragging the Premier League to court.

Common sense dictates that the current campaign should be resumed from where it was left off when it is completely safe to do so and in this case, Liverpool will then have their opportunity to complete their quest for Premier League glory.

It will be a great day when we finally get to watch our beloved Reds in action again, but until then, stay home and stay safe!
