Earlier this month, French outlet Le 10 Sport reported that Liverpool were plotting a mega-money move to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly this summer.

Not much has been heard about the Reds looking to complete a possible deal for the Senegalese star since then, but one of the club’s former players, who knows a thing or two about Napoli as well as Liverpool, has urged Jurgen Klopp to make a move for the defender.

Italian full-back Andrea Dossena played for both Liverpool and Napoli during his career and whilst he acknowledged just how good the Reds are, he also believes that they should sign Koulibaly as he would take them to even greater heights.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Musica TV, as cited by the Daily Mail, he said of Koulibaly:

[He is] physical and speedy, he is one of the best central defenders in the world and can have his say in the Premier League, too. Klopp is missing just one piece to complete a stratospheric squad and the Koulibaly – [Virgil] Van Dijk pairing could become a big barrier.

Given the nature of the world we are currently living in, it seems very difficult to believe that Liverpool would be willing to pay out the type of transfer fee that Napoli would almost certainly ask for in order for them to let Koulibaly leave.

Dossena is right when he says that a partnership of Koulibaly and Van Dijk would be great to see, as both have proven that they are amongst the best defenders in the world.

However, even if the world was in a state of normality, it would be difficult to see Liverpool paying a huge fee for Koulibaly, given the outlay on Van Dijk and the other options that Klopp has at his disposal.

In the current climate, it seems almost impossible to envisage a scenario where Koulibaly is a Liverpool player next season.
