Liverpool among three clubs who want to ‘fix’ Dayot Upamecano deal in January

Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City all want to ‘fix’ a deal for Dayot Upamecano in January, according to Sport Bild [via Sport Witness].

The 21-year-old is thriving at RB Leipzig, gaining a reputation as one of Europe’s leading young centre-backs.

With Liverpool without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for a long-term period, Jurgen Klopp could delve into the transfer market in January. Upamecano has been tipped to join the Reds in the past and those rumours aren’t going away at the moment.

It is now claimed that Liverpool, United and City are all keen on snapping up the Frenchman in January, beating Bayern Munich to his capture in the process, as they deal with David Alaba’s contract situation.

Upamecano is a dominant, highly-rated defender, and he would be a strong addition to Liverpool’s squad.

He will cost a huge sum of money in January, however – his release clause next summer is reportedly €45m (£40.2m) – so if Klopp genuinely wants him, he will need to view him as a long-term purchase.

If that isn’t the case, it isn’t worth Liverpool splashing out such a big fee, and they would then be better off going for a cheaper option such as Ozan Kabak instead.

It could even be that Klopp doesn’t buy a new centre-back in the next window, but that feels like a huge risk, given the lack of options.
