Former Liverpool player and assistant manager Phil Thompson has claimed that Steven Gerrard could be the man to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Thompson told the From the Horse’s Mouth podcast that his fellow club legend and former player under his stewardship could add to his legacy on Merseyside by returning as manager.
The 66-year-old said: ”Graeme (Souness) got his first managerial job at Rangers and then get Liverpool off the back of it, so I would think Steven’s got a fair chance of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. He’s obviously the one that comes to mind when it comes to the next Liverpool manager.”
Gerrard, a Red of 504 Premier League appearances before his departure in 2015, is in the process of ending Celtic’s stranglehold north of the border as his Rangers side sit 19 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Nobody should be in a rush to shoehorn the former captain into the hot-seat, nor kick Klopp out of it for that matter.
However, it’s hard to ignore the audition the former Reds midfielder is currently enjoying in Glasgow. Having left the Anfield coaching staff for his first role as a senior level manager, the apparent heir to the Anfield throne is doing his chances no harm thus far.
Stopping Celtic’s pursuit of 10 titles in a row would undoubtedly be a huge tick in the box for the Scouser, who almost certainly dreams of the day he returns to Liverpool, albeit a few years off yet.
