Tony Adams suggests Arsenal should’ve signed ‘wonderful’ Joe Gomez

Legendary Arsenal central defender Tony Adams has questioned why the North London club didn’t sign Liverpool star Joe Gomez during his Charlton Athletic days.

The Reds landed the now 23-year-old back in 2015 from Charlton and the London-born centre-back has since made 121 appearances for the club.

Adams, who like Gomez was born in London played an astonishing 409 times for the Gunners, and he told Stadium Astro his former club should’ve been in the frame for the Liverpool man:

”Where we’ve (Arsenal) done wrong, is we haven’t pinpointed areas of recruitment. I love (Matty) Cash at Villa for instance, he’s a Londoner. (Joe) Gomez is another Londoner! He’s a wonderful football, one of the best centre-backs in the country. Those kinds of kids.”

Since his arrival, Gomez has established himself as an England regular and had formed a formidable partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk prior to a severe knee injury that brought a premature end to his 2020/21 campaign.

Signing Gomez as a talented teenager for just £3.5m has proven to be a hugely successful piece of business from the Reds.

Now valued at £36m and having played a pivotal role in a trophy-laden period in the club’s history, few transfers can claim to have provided better value for money.

Last season’s highest average Sofascore rating for a central defender was accredited to van Dijk at 7.28 whilst Gomez finished with 6.92, no disgrace but a little way off competing with the best in the league.
