Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has backed Liverpool to shock many and pull off a major summer signing.
It’s expected the Reds will undergo a minor squad overhaul in this transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looks to rebuild a side capable of challenging for top honours once more, Anfield could become a hive of activity.
Having already acted to solve their defensive crisis by confirming the deal to land Ibrahima Konate, outgoings have been tipped to be the driver behind any more Merseyside arrivals.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips has tipped Divock Origi to be an early big-name departure and suggested the club could pull off a surprise capture.
I think they could get by without a new striker. It’s not ideal. They got by last season, Origi never really played, did he? It’s not going to be a major blow if he leaves. From the player’s point of view, he needs to leave now. He can go and play somewhere else in England or abroad. Someone could then nick a striker who we know has quality. He needs to find that hunger again. From Liverpool’s point of view, I think they will look to replace him. Whether they go big and get a big signing or go under the radar. They might surprise a lot of people.
Origi is certainly one name mentioned as a potential departure, along with the likes of Harry Wilson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Grujic and Neco Williams.
The 26-year-old Belgian forward could prove to be a healthy source of income for the Reds as reports claim the 17 appearance man last season could be made available for £12million.

Liverpool have developed a penchant for making more reserved under the radar type signings in recent seasons, albeit most deals have proven to be successful.
Whilst it’s unlikely the Reds will be breaking any transfer records this summer, perhaps a move for a reported target such as Raphinha or Alexander Isak would still stretch the budget and raise the odd eyebrow.
A deal more in line with the recent policy would be landing PSV Eindhoven ace Donyell Malen, reportedly available for £26million and with plenty of potential to develop.
