Liverpool have reportedly ‘contacted’ the representatives of Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to agree to extend his stay at the Catalan giants.
However, returning club legend Xavi has called for Barcelona to tie down the Frenchman who could become the ‘best in world in his position’.
According to a report from Todofichajes, as cited on Twitter, the Reds and Newcastle United are both waiting for a decision.
The report claims that Liverpool have informed the 27-cap World Cup winner they are keen and a decision is expected in a ‘matter of months’.
This season Dembele has been plagued by injury and has only played 25 minutes of competitive football as a result.

Unfortunately, the once £135.5million superstar has been hit by injury all too often since arriving in Spain from Borussia Dortmund.
Already boasting a trophy-laden career with plenty of goals and assists when fit, Dembele certainly possesses the skillset to play for any top side in the world.
Capable of playing across the frontline, Jurgen Klopp would benefit greatly from the Frenchman’s addition at Anfield and should remain alert to the situation.
Valued at £45million (Transfermarkt), despite the injury woes Liverpool would still be landing a top-quality player capable of supporting Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for nothing next summer.
