Mark Lawrenson backs ‘free-scoring’ Liverpool for EPL victory

Liverpool will be looking to cut the gap at the top of the Premier League back to three points when they face Leicester City tonight (December 28).

The Reds are currently six points adrift of Manchester City with a game in hand as Jurgen Klopp’s side head to the Midlands.

This game comes almost a week after Liverpool eliminated Brendan Rodgers’ men in a Carabao Cup thriller at Anfield following a superb second-half comeback.

Writing in his weekly BBC Sport prediction column, former Kop favourite Mark Lawrenson has tipped the title protagonists to flex their muscles once again.

Leicester were fine going forward against Manchester City on Sunday, but they were wide open at the back. That’s the last thing you want going into a game against a team as free-scoring as Liverpool are, and Leicester’s injury problems will make it difficult for them to change things around too much.

Lawrenson backed the Reds to get the job done 2-0 and maintain the pressure at the top of the table.

Goals have certainly not been an issue amongst Klopp’s squad as Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota sit first and second in the top-flight goalscoring charts with 15 and 10 strikes respectively.

All of Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones, Thiago and Fabinho could return for the clash whilst Harvey Elliott and Divock Origi remain absent.

Given the obvious issues defensively amongst the Leicester squad and the firepower in the Liverpool one, this is a game that promises to be an exciting one from a Kopite perspective.

Having previously put on a show at the King Power Stadium with a 4-0 victory in 2019, Klopp will be hoping for something similar this time.

Star of the show on that night, Trent Alexander-Arnold, can be confident of adding to a remarkable 13 direct goal contributions from right-back this season.
