Preview: Liverpool vs West Ham – prediction, team news, lineups

Liverpool will be aiming to keep their top-four dreams alive in the Premier League with another victory when relegation-threatened West Ham United comes to town on Saturday.

The fixtures keep coming thick and fast for Arne Slot’s men during the business end of the season, with only 11 games left in the Premier League campaign for the Reds to catapult into those elusive Champions League spots.

Liverpool will head into this tie confident they can get a win no matter what, having overcome the stern test of another relegation candidate in Nottingham Forest on Sunday, as a last-gasp winner from Alexis Mac Allister separated the sides.

This never-say-die attitude should stand Slot’s men in good stead to beat West Ham, who are also fighting for their lives at the very foot of the division, alongside Vitor Pereira’s determined outfit.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the crucial clash at both ends of the table:

How to watch

The fixture will kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, February 28.

Due to the 3pm blackout rules in the UK, the match will not be broadcast on TV.

Instead, the highlights of the game can be watched on the Sky Sports App or on YouTube from 5:15pm, with Match Of The Day’s coverage on BBC One starting at 10:30pm.

Recent form

Liverpool:

Slot’s men come into this showdown with West Ham in positive recent form, even if the overall up-and-down nature of the season has them occupying an unsatisfactory sixth position.

Across their last five games in all competitions, the underperforming Reds have won four clashes and lost one, with that devastating defeat coming at the hands of familiar title foes Manchester City.

Still, away from that demoralising 2-1 loss, Liverpool have looked steady across their last three performances, with three wins collected also seeing Slot and Co. pick up three clean sheets on the bounce.

Liverpool will also further fancy their chances when you consider their head-to-head record with the Hammers across their last five outings.

Indeed, the current top-flight champions have won their last four meetings when tasked with unsettling the East Londoners.

Of course, football often isn’t played on paper, with West Ham desperate to pull off an upset, to stave off relegation down to the Championship.

West Ham:

At one stage this season, West Ham looked dead and buried in their mission to stay afloat in the Premier League.

Thankfully, for those of a Hammers persuasion, they have shown signs of life in the ongoing relegation battle under the new tenure of Nuno Espirito Santo.

Across their last five games in all competitions, the resolute Hammers have only stumbled to one defeat, which was a narrow 3-2 loss away at Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea.

The standout result, among this positive patch of form, was arguably a gritty 2-0 win away at fellow relegation candidates Burnley, with hard-fought draws against Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth also sticking out.

Liverpool won’t have an easy ride at Anfield; therefore, when the 3pm kick-off gets underway, as West Ham attempt to collect a rare scalp on Merseyside, much like they did in 2015 when winning 3-0 on the Reds’ home turf.

Manager have their say:

Arne Slot:

Slot knows that his team is in for a tricky clash against West Ham on the weekend, despite the lowly predicament of the visitors.

He said: The win in November against West Ham was an important win, we played well.

Resulted in a win, only lost twice since then, only in extra time, which is nothing new for us this season! Maybe things have changed, finally, as we scored stoppage time v Forest.”

Slot also spoke fondly of Mohamed Salah, who he will hope can break his goal drought on Saturday.

He further stated: “He sets his own standards and they were so, so high. When he doesn’t score for a few games, it means people are surprised.

We are used to Mo scoring a lot of goals, but we also know this has happened before, and in the end, he always starts scoring again.”

Nuno Espirito Santo:

The ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers boss sounded ready for the challenge at Anfield, when speaking to the media before the trip to Merseyside.

He said: “We can’t spend too much time and sorrow thinking about what could be—we have to bounce back.

It’s a big challenge and it can bring the best out of us. That’s the motivation. Being a chaser is the reality, but it’s been that way for a while and we’re in the fight.”

Still, as much as he was relishing the challenge, he also knows full well the might of the Reds on their day.

He concluded by stating: ““We know we played at home against Liverpool so now it’s at Anfield.

We know how tough it’ll be. So new things, new answers, new challenge, but we’re ready to play. The boys work hard so we are confident while realising how tough it is going to be.”
