Liverpool News: Andoni Iraola identified as prime Arne Slot successor after Anfield crisis talks

The atmosphere at Anfield has shifted rapidly. With fan support wavering and rumors of an “emergency summit” between players and staff, the conversation regarding Slot’s successor has intensified.

While Xabi Alonso remains the romantic favourite, Andoni Iraola has emerged as a tactically fascinating and logistically plausible alternative.

Liverpool’s disastrous 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City has piled further pressure on Arne Slot. Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick as the Reds fell to their heaviest loss in the competition for 80 years. Mohamed Salah also missed a penalty.

Next up is a daunting Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Paris Saint-Germain. And talkSPORT pundits have already begun speculating about who could replace Arne Slot should the Dutchman’s tenure come to an early end.

Andoni Iraola is a genuine contender

Commentator Jim Proudfoot hinted that Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola could be in the frame. “I think some of the people that you could imagine being his successor are already available. Some of those aren’t, Andoni Iraola for instance.”

Proudfoot then revealed a key behind-the-scenes link. “Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s technical director, is a massive admirer. Brought him in at Bournemouth, he’s done nothing at Bournemouth that would mean his stock has dropped in any way.”

He added: “He’s out of contract in the summer, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was one that they wanted to speak to, along with the likes of Xabi Alonso and everybody else.”

What would Andoni Iraola bring to Anfield?

The 43-year-old Spaniard has impressed across three seasons on the south coast. He led Bournemouth to 12th and 9th-place Premier League finishes and currently has them battling for European football, sitting just four points off the top seven with seven games left.

Adrian Durham, also speaking on talkSPORT, acknowledged that Liverpool may keep faith with Slot for now. “There will definitely be a decision to be made. I reckon, with no inside track, that they will keep faith with him, because he’s got enough in the bank over what happened over the course of last season.”

But the pressure is real. Arne Slot has made Liverpool “incredibly tedious to watch” according to some critics, and the Reds have gone winless in five of their last seven games across all competitions. They sit fifth in the Premier League, 21 points behind Arsenal.

Will Arne Slot survive the summer?

Proudfoot summed up the uncertainty. “I would think that there’s got to be a chance that he [Slot] will still be in (the job) in the summer, but will he still be there at the start of next season? I think that all depends on what happens from here on in.”

Bournemouth remain optimistic of keeping Andoni Iraola, with talkSPORT understanding they are trying to persuade him to commit his future. But if Liverpool come calling, and with Hughes already an admirer, this is a story that won’t go away quietly.
