Steve Nicol spots ‘worrying’ Virgil van Dijk moment that proves Arne Slot problem
  • Liverpool’s FA Cup nightmare and Van Dijk’s reaction
  • Steve Nicol’s thoughts on the captain and Liverpool
  • The Reds’ current situation and Champions League qualification

Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup has been alarming. Virgil Van Dijk has become a sorry figure after being a poor performer on Saturday, raising concerns from a former player.

The Reds were beaten heavily 4-0 at the Etihad in the FA Cup quarter finals. This exposed a lot about the side.

However, one central moment was the skipper’s tackle on Nico O’Reilly, which handed City a penalty. An Erling Haaland hat-trick and an Antoine Semenyo strike put the game beyond the visitors.

Perhaps what’s more concerning is the centre-back’s suggestion that his team-mates gave up hope of winning the match, as they conceded all their goals over 20 minutes. Later, club legend Steve Nicol commented on the Ductman’s action.

Steve Nicol’s thoughts on Van Dijk

Ex-player Steve Nicol expressed his frustration with the reigningPremier League champions performance and spoke about the captain’s post-match reaction. Speaking to ESPN, he said:

“I think you can see with that interview that your captain is devoid of energy.”

“The life’s been sucked out of him, and right now this team is sucking the life out of the fans as well.”

Moreover, the pundit added that he no longer believes the Dutchman can rejuvenate the side

“I’m beginning to waver, I’m beginning to go the other way,” he said. “I don’t know how Arne Slot can rejuvenate this side between now and Wednesday night to play PSG”.

“He really has a job on his hands, not just to get this team going but to keep his job because it’s getting worse.

“Every time they step on the field, as a fan watching it, you’re scared because you’re not sure how many it’s going to be. You know there’s going to be goals, you’re just not sure how many. And for any manager to be in that position where everybody and everyone around you is beginning to lose trust in you, you’re in big trouble.”

The Dutchman also apologised to the supporters for what has happened so far in the season.

What can Liverpool still salvage from this season?

The FA Cup quarter-final exit is a huge blow for Liverpool and Arne Slot. Now, their only hope of silverware is the Champions League.

With big players faltering and new arrivals failing to meet expectations, it would be a difficult remaining games for the Anfield faithful.

However, Liverpool are firmly in crisis, and a growing section of the supporters is losing faith in the manager. Securing Champions League qualification for the next campaign is not just a target but the only way to salvage what has been a disappointing season.
