Robbie Fowler breaks silence on Arne Slot’s future as pressure mounts
  • Slot is under pressure after Liverpool’s poor season
  • Robbie Fowler thinks that only securing a Champions League spot might not be enough to secure Slot’s job
  • Fowler highlighted the importance of winning the Champions League for the Reds

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is facing the heat, with the Reds falling well short of expectations so far this season. At a time like this, Robbie Fowler has commented on the manager’s future, and it is only going to add to the pressure.

Liverpool suffered a 2–0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-finals. Needless to say, it will be important for the Reds to try to overturn the deficit against PSG on aggregate at Anfield, especially as this is the only competition they still have a chance of winning.

The Merseyside club has already crashed out of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. Additionally, their Premier League title defence is practically over. As a result, the pressure will be on Slot to get his tactics right against PSG in the second leg and hope for a miracle.

In the meantime, Robbie Fowler, who certainly knows a thing or two about winning trophies, has shared his thoughts regarding Slot’s future at Anfield. While speaking to Football on TNT Sport, The Liverpool legend has said:

“It’s a huge week, but I’ll be honest with you, it’s no huge than every other week. I mean, he’s a Liverpool manager, he’s expected to get results, he’s expected to be challenged for league titles, you know, challenging the later rounds of cup competitions.

And obviously If Liverpool go on and win the Champions League, then, you know, he’s here next year.

But the questions are always going to be asked towards the end of the season. If you don’t win it, you don’t win the FA Cup, you don’t win the Champions League, even if you get into the Champions League, questions will be asked because I think you need to win trophies.“

Arne Slot will need to win the Champions League to secure his position

Liverpool have won just two of their last five matches in the Premier League. They currently sit in fifth position, five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa. It’s fair to say that a top five finish will not be easy for the Reds to achieve, with seven matches left to play.

That said, an ideal situation for the Merseyside club would be winning the Champions League, which would guarantee them a place in next season’s competition and also add silverware to their trophy cabinet. But the recent defeat against PSG will certainly put a dent in those dreams.

Slot, for one, will be happy and relieved if his team can turn things around in the second leg and progress to the semis.

How Liverpool need to proceed with the Paris Saint-Germain second-leg matchup

With the first leg done and dusted, Slot’s men will have to rely on the advantage of the Anfield atmosphere in the second leg to mount a comeback. One could only hope that the Reds will pull something off at home.

Nevertheless, PSG may be one of the best clubs in the world at the moment, but they certainly are not invincible. In fact, this season itself, the French giants failed to achieve automatic qualification in the Champions League and had to go through the playoffs.

Slot will have a crucial role to play next week when Liverpool face PSG again. The Dutch tactician will be expected to learn from the mistakes in the first matchup and fix them going into the second.

Let’s just hope that all the Liverpool players rise to the occasion and deliver when the team needs them the most.
