  • The former Ireland striker has claimed Liverpool aren’t a good side
  • Cascarino has acknowledged the role of injuries this season

Former Ireland forward Tony Cascarino has recently made some explosive claims about the current Liverpool side, and the fans won’t be happy to hear about it.

Tony Cascarino hasn’t held back in his latest assessment of Arne Slot’s Liverpool. Following the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint Germain, the pundit makes a series of explosive claims that will leave fans reeling.

Expectations were sky-high at Anfield this August, with Arne Slot inheriting a squad already capable of conquering England. After a summer of shrewd recruitment, anything less than a clean sweep of silverware felt like a missed opportunity for this reinforced Liverpool side

However, fast forward to today and things are clearly not looking too bright for the Reds. Firstly, they are already out of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. Moreover, their chances of defending the Premier League title are as good as none, with the club sitting in fifth position, 21 points behind leader Arsenal at the top.

The only trophy the Reds are still in the running for is the Champions League. But given their 2–0 first-leg defeat against PSG, it would take nothing less than a miracle for them to make a comeback in the return leg at Anfield to go all the way.

Despite Liverpool’s poor campaign, few would argue that they have some of the best players in the world in their squad. Arne Slot has reiterated this time and again as well. However, it seems Tony Cascarino thinks otherwise.

Tony Cascarino highlights Liverpool have been “inconsistent” despite new signings

In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Cascarino disagreed with the Dutch tactician and made some explosive claims. He stated:

“Well, I don’t agree with Arnie that Liverpool are a very good side this season. They’ve got some very good players. They invested heavily in the summer to improve the team, and the team hasn’t been better. I mean you can say, yes, there’s a number of injuries, which they clearly had to certain individuals. Obviously, Isak has been out for quite a long time now.

You only have to look at their results. The one at Brighton didn’t play well, I don’t think. I don’t think they played well at all. Played well against Galatasaray in the Champions League, won that comfortably. Drew Spurs didn’t play well. You know, drew 1-1 but didn’t play well again.”

“So they’ve been so inconsistent this year and that has been the standout feature of Liverpool. Yes, they’ve got very good players. They’ve got some players that have seen better days as well. We’ve seen Mo Salah really have a different season. And it’s not making him a scapegoat. There’s others in there. And I think it’s been a strange year for Liverpool, to say the least.“

Honestly speaking, Cascarino’s words might sound harsh, but he has mostly pointed out some real issues lately. After all, results are what matter, and the Reds haven’t been able to deliver much in important matchups.

Injuries have undoubtedly played a huge role, but the available players haven’t been able to deliver either, further making the situation even more difficult.

Way forward for Liverpool this season

In terms of the Premier League, a top-five finish is achievable for the Reds if they manage to find some form and build on it from here. The club will face Fulham in the upcoming weekend.

Now, coming to other fronts, the chances of going through to the semi finals of the Champions League look bleak as well. That said, Liverpool have come back from tougher situations in the second leg at Anfield. So overturning a 2–0 deficit isn’t an impossible task for them by any means.

Needless to say, the next few weeks will certainly be a vital period for the Reds. The players will need to step up to shut down the critics and prove that it’s only a bad phase.
