“Total standby” – Fabrizio Romano reveals uncertain future for Liverpool midfielder amid Inter Milan interest

  • Fabrizio Romano has provided a transfer update on the Scouser
  • Inter Milan are already circling

Fabrizio Romano has shared a worrying Curtis Jones transfer update with a Liverpool departure in the pipeline.

Jones is set to enter the final year of his contract at Anfield, meaning the Reds have an important decision to make regarding the only Scouser in Arne Slot’s first-team setup.

The England international has been restricted to just 18 starts in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, thus suggesting he does not feature prominently in the Dutchman’s plans.

This has led to speculation over the midfielder’s future in L4, with Romano’s latest update guaranteed to make for uncomfortable reading for some Liverpool fans.

Liverpool and Jones at “total standby”, says Romano

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast on Monday (27 April), the transfer journalist name-dropped Jones as one of the midfielders to watch out for this summer transfer window.

Describing the Liverpool ace as underrated, Romano revealed that there are no suggestions that the club and the player have held talks over extending his contract beyond 2027.

He explained that the situation between the Reds and the 25-year-old is at a “total standby”, leaving the door open for a summer transfer.

Several clubs are said to be keeping tabs on Jones, who was the subject of interest from teams in the Premier League in the January transfer window.

There was also interest from Inter Milan, who remain keen on acquiring his services.

What it means for Reds

Despite his obvious talents and love for the club, Jones has not managed to win over the entire fanbase.

However, that does not mean Liverpool should cash in on him just yet, especially considering their struggles in midfield.

In a season in which Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister have failed to live up to expectations, Jones has often been a source of fresh air.

He notably impressed as the right-back, as Liverpool beat Everton in the first-ever Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

That is why the six-time European champions should resist the urge to sell Jones this summer, especially if they have no plans to strengthen their midfield significantly.

Ultimately, letting a homegrown talent like Curtis Jones walk away during a period of midfield instability would be a massive gamble for the Reds.

While he may not be the first name on Arne Slot’s scoresheet every week, his tactical flexibility evidenced by his standout shift at right-back in the historic Merseyside derby makes him an invaluable squad asset.

With no contract extension currently on the horizon and heavyweights like Inter Milan waiting in the wings, Liverpool find themselves at a crossroads.

If the club fails to break the “total standby” and offer Jones a clear path forward, they risk losing a peak-age Scouser who still has plenty to offer the Anfield project. Replacing his technical quality and passion for the badge won’t just be expensive; it might be impossible.
