Former Liverpool Hero Adrián San Miguel Announces Retirement: ‘I’m Where I Belong’

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Adrián San Miguel has officially announced that he will retire from professional football following Real Betis’ final game of the 2025/26 season.

The 39-year-old took to social media to share an emotional farewell message with his boyhood club’s supporters, closing the curtain on a professional career that spanned nearly two decades and included a historic, trophy-laden spell on Merseyside.

What has happened?

Adrián confirmed via his X (formerly Twitter) account that he will hang up his gloves at the end of the current campaign. Writing an emotional letter to fans, the veteran shot-stopper stated:

“You already know this will be my last match as Betis goalkeeper, but I also want to announce that in recent hours I have decided this will also be my last match as a football player. I’m retiring in the place where I belong 💚 Thank you, béticos!”

The Spaniard rejoined Real Betis in the summer of 2024 after his contract with Liverpool expired. Despite being offered a one-year contract extension by incoming manager Arne Slot to remain at Anfield as an experienced dressing room anchor, Adrián felt the emotional pull to return home to Seville, where his footballing journey first began.

While he primarily served as a backup option during his final season in La Liga making just five appearances his decision to bow out at the Estadio Benito Villamarín provides a fairytale conclusion to his career.

Remembering his immediate impact at Anfield

Adrián’s move to Liverpool in August 2019 remains one of the most remarkable free transfer stories in recent club history. Having just been released by West Ham United, he was brought in by Jürgen Klopp to replace Simon Mignolet as Alisson Becker’s deputy.

Nobody could have predicted how quickly he would be thrown into the deep end. Just four days after his arrival, Alisson suffered a calf injury during the first half of the opening night of the 2019/20 Premier League season against Norwich City. Adrián stepped up to make his debut in a 4-1 victory, but his true folklore moment would arrive less than a week later.

Starting the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea in Istanbul, the match went down to a dramatic penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. Adrián became the instant hero, saving Tammy Abraham’s decisive spot-kick to secure Liverpool their first silverware of that iconic season. Klopp famously celebrated the moment by channelling Sylvester Stallone, screaming “ADRIANNNN!” into the TV cameras.

While Alisson remained sidelined through the autumn of 2019, Adrián spearheaded a crucial run of seven consecutive Premier League victories.

Ultimately, he played 18 times in all competitions during that unforgettable 2019/20 campaign, including 11 appearances in the Premier League. His perfect domestic winning record in that stretch laid the foundational scaffolding that allowed Liverpool to completely blow away the competition and end their agonizing 30-year wait for a top-flight league title.

Over his five-year tenure on Merseyside, Adrián amassed 26 competitive appearances, collecting winners’ medals for the Premier League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FA Community Shield in 2022.

Even when game time became scarce due to the emergence of Caoimhín Kelleher, his professionalism, positive influence, and infectious character within the goalkeeping department made him an invaluable squad member until his departure in 2024.

An underappreciated hero who stepped up when it mattered most.

When fans look back at the legendary 2019/20 title-winning squad, names like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Sadio Mané naturally steal the headlines. But the history books should never undervalue what Adrián did during those first two months of the season.

Stepping into Alisson’s boots with zero pre-season under your belt is one of the most daunting tasks in modern football. To not only steady the ship but to win every single Premier League game he started in that crucial opening block was spectacular.

Without those 21 points he helped secure on the bounce, the psychological momentum of that title charge might have looked very different.

Yes, there were erratic moments later in his Anfield career most notably the Champions League exit against Atlético Madrid but his overall contribution as a free transfer signing was outstanding value. Beyond the pitch, he was widely regarded as the ultimate professional, a brilliant mentor to Kelleher, and a massive presence in the dressing room.

Ending his career back home with Real Betis is exactly how his story deserved to finish.
