The 16-year-old Hertha Berlin midfielder Kennet Eichhorn has chosen to stay in his homeland despite intensive efforts from the Reds
Liverpool have missed out on highly-rated teenage midfielder Kennet Eichhorn after the 16-year-old gave the green light to join Bayer Leverkusen from Hertha Berlin.
After Bayern Munich withdrew their interest, Liverpool emerged as the favourites to sign the highly rated German midfielder. Christian Falk described the Reds as having the “best chance” of winning the race, but Eichhorn ultimately chose to stay in the Bundesliga, leaving Liverpool to miss out on the teenager.
The deal confirmed
Respected transfer reporter Florian Plettenberg broke the news on Wednesday morning, writing on X: “Kennet Eichhorn to Bayer 04 Leverkusen – done deal. The 16 y/o gem has now given his final green light. Rejections have been sent to all other clubs. Eichhorn will join Leverkusen from Hertha BSC via a release clause worth €8m-€9m. Contract until 2031. Medical soon. The saga is over.”
The news was subsequently confirmed by David Ornstein for The Athletic, Leverkusen beat several rivals to the midfielder’s signature, pulling off a significant coup in the process and emerging as the surprise winners of the transfer battle.
Why Liverpool missed out
Eichhorn had received considerable attention from across Europe, with Plettenberg previously reporting that Liverpool made ‘intensive efforts’ to secure the player’s services. Even the lure of Champions League football at Anfield, however, was not enough to persuade the teenager to leave his homeland.
The youngster views Leverkusen, one of Germany’s most progressive clubs under Xabi Alonso, as the ideal environment to continue his development. He believes the club can provide a clear pathway to first-team football and regular opportunities at a high level in the near future.
The Athletic’s German football expert Sebastian Stafford-Bloor has spoken glowingly of the player, describing Eichhorn as ‘the German talent of his generation’ and a player with a ‘very exciting future’, adding that he has been ‘compared with a young Toni Kroos.’
Liverpool turn attention elsewhere
The Reds appear determined to move quickly. Liverpool have already opened talks over a potential move for Manchester City academy midfielder Xavier Parker, another highly rated teenage prospect. The move highlights the club’s focus on securing top young talent despite recent setbacks in the market.
Liverpool continue to follow a clear transfer strategy under their current recruitment model. The club identifies some of the most exciting young midfielders in England and across Europe, acts decisively to secure their signatures, and quickly shifts attention to alternative targets when negotiations break down.

This one will sting. Eichhorn is precisely the type of player Liverpool have been targeting young, technically elite, with a sky-high ceiling and the fact that even Champions League football couldn’t tip the balance speaks to how fiercely competitive the market for elite teenage talent has become.
That said, there is no reason for panic. The pursuit of Xavier Parker suggests the recruitment team had contingencies in place, and Liverpool’s track record in identifying and developing young midfielders means they will not be short of options.
Missing out on a player of this calibre hurts, but the response will define whether this is a minor setback or a missed opportunity they come to regret.
