5 best Anfield miracles: Liverpool’s greatest European comebacks

It is going to take an epic comeback from Liverpool tonight to topple Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter finals with a current 2-0 deficit.

The “Anfield Miracle” is not just a catchy headline or a bit of local folklore; it is a documented phenomenon that has defied logic, physics, and some of the greatest footballing dynasties in history.

There is something about the convergence of the floodlights, the roar from the Spion Kop, and the weight of European history that seems to scare opponents and give Liverpool players a second wind they didn’t know they possessed.

Yet, Arne Slot‘s Reds were comfortably brushed aside during the first leg 2-0 at the Parc Des Princes, having only been able to muster up three shots on the largely untested PSG net all night long.

Therefore, it is going to be a very tall order for Slot’s men to overcome that two-goal deficit and keep PSG at bay if they want to pull off a memorable second leg turnaround.

As Arne Slot prepares his squad to face PSG, the task ahead is undeniably daunting. Overturning a two-goal deficit against a side boasting world-class attacking talent is a tall order for any team, especially one dealing with a significant injury crisis.

Yet, the ghosts of Anfield’s past offer a roadmap for the impossible. From the tactical masterclasses of the 70s to the heavy-metal chaos of the modern era, Liverpool has turned “lost causes” into legendary triumphs time and time again.

Before the first whistle blows against the Parisians, we’re looking back at the five nights where the impossible became reality. These are the moments that proved no lead is safe when the Kop is in full voice, and the European stakes are at their highest.

This will fill Reds supporters with some blind optimism that they can do it all over again versus Luis Enrique’s reigning champions.

1. Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona – 2019

Of course, every Liverpool fan will likely bring this comeback up immediately when sharing fond memories of the Champions League at Anfield.

Losing the first leg 3-0 at the Camp Nou, Jurgen Klopp’s men looked dead and buried in their chances of reaching the 2019 final played in Madrid.

However, nobody told the players donning Liverpool red on the night that the tie was over, as Anfield roared the likes of Divock Origi over the line, to seal one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s history, with a 4-0 second leg win.

The most memorable goal of the lot was Origi’s that levelled the tie at 3-3, as a cleverly executed corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold found the Belgian poacher perfectly to tap home.

2. Liverpool 4-3 Borussia Dortmund – 2016

Klopp was involved in two sensational European comebacks during his long and celebrated reign in charge of the Reds, as he audaciously got the better of his former employers, Borussia Dortmund, in 2016, in the Europa League.

Indeed, on this exact day eight years ago, Liverpool were left needing a miracle to overcome the might of their Bundesliga opponents, and they managed to pull it off in style.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked to have put the two-legged affair beyond doubt when they bagged early into the match at Anfield, bumping Dortmund’s lead to an assured 3-1 on aggregate.

However, Liverpool never refused to give in, as three goals were powered home in the final 25 minutes, to secure a stunning 4-3 success on the night, and secure their progression through to the next round of the competition.

Dejan Lovren was the unlikely hero, as he nodded home the fourth in stoppage time, to send Anfield into pandemonium.

3. Liverpool 3-1 Olympiakos – 2004

It hasn’t always been in the wild drama of the knockout rounds where Liverpool have had to conjure up a moment of sublime magic to upset the odds.

Indeed, in 2004, Liverpool desperately needed to beat Olympiakos by two goals on their own patch to get out of the Champions League group stages.

When Rivaldo scored an early opener for the Greek visitors, their hopes of a magical night under the lights at Anfield looked to have been dashed.

Thankfully, Liverpool weren’t too deterred by the Brazilian breaking the deadlock, as they managed to fire home the three goals they desperately needed.

Steven Gerrard would emphatically blast home the third on the 86th-minute mark, with this effort just one of many blistering strikes fired home by the Reds icon during his lengthy stay on Merseyside.

Without that goal, Liverpool wouldn’t have been crowned champions that same season against AC Milan, in a final at Istanbul that saw the Reds work their comeback magic once more.

4. Liverpool 3-1 Saint Etienne – 1977

These last two examples are major blasts from the past, with Liverpool needing to beat Saint Etienne all the way back in 1977 at Anfield to reach the last four of the European Cup.

Heading into this match, they were one goal down, and it was a dream start in this second encounter, as Kevin Keegan handed Liverpool a one-goal lead after barely two minutes had been played.

As former Reds player Joey Jones recollected of the night: “For me it was the greatest atmosphere I ever played in.”

Unfortunately, the French side did take the lead on aggregate in the second half, but the Anfield masses wouldn’t be let down, as further second-half strikes from Ray Kennedy and David Farclough made sure of a fantastic win on home soil for Bob Paisley’s men.

5. Liverpool 3-2 Club Brugge – 1976

Last, but by no means least, Liverpool were in the European Cup final in 1976.

Back then, the final was unusually played out across two legs, and it looked as if it was going to be a nightmare first leg at Anfield, when Club Brugge powered into a two-goal advantage.

Amazingly, though, the Merseyside titans turned the vital game around in a flash, when Ray Kennedy, Jimmy Case, and Kevin Keegan all got in on the goalscoring act in a seven-minute flurry of goals.

With the second leg score reading 1-1, Liverpool were crowned European champions, with that insane first leg comeback steering them to the trophy at the Olympiastadion.

Liverpool now have a great chance in the here and now to etch their names into Reds folklore forever, with another earth-shuddering turnaround a “tale written in time” according to the Anfield Wrap.

In a couple of years, Reds supporters might look back on tonight’s clash with PSG as another other-worldly occasion, where a European foe was humbled spectacularly.
