Former Liverpool player John Aldridge has backed the club to make a move for Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
Aldridge says that Wener would be a great signing for Liverpool and has stressed that world-class players now want to sign for the club due to Jurgen Klopp’s influence.
Speaking to The Independent, Aldridge said this:
Prolific Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner would be a great option and the joy for Liverpool will be that every player will want to be part of their success story.
I saw Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe eulogising Liverpool in an interview a few days ago and it confirmed that the world’s greatest players are captivated by the story Klopp has pieced together.
READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT
Werner has scored a sensational 20 goals in 19 Bundesliga games for Leipzig this season, whilst Roberto Firmino has scored eight in 23 Premier League matches for Liverpool. Whilst Firmino has been an important, and vital, member of Jurgen Klopp’s side, this does suggest that Werner could be a stronger option in the number nine position for the Reds.
Firmino has recorded a WhoScored rating of 7.36 this season, with Werner currently on 7.80. Not only does Werner beat Firmino for goals, but he has also registered six assists to Firmino’s four and averages more key passes per-game than the Brazilian.
It has to be said that the styles of the teams have to be considered. Firmino has a particular role in the Liverpool system which means that he is not always in the positions to score goals – often dropping deeper or purely pressing to cause problems. This means that it is not as cut and dry as saying Werner would be better, although he could represent real competition for places and give Jurgen Klopp more options at the top end of the pitch.
