Liverpool travelled to London to face off against Tottenham on Saturday night, in a crucial match for both teams.
The Reds looked to further strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League, while Spurs needed a win to stay within six points of fourth-place Chelsea.
With Jose Mourinho in the managerial hot-seat at Spurs, it was expected that his team would be set up in a low block and would play on the counter-attack, in order to neutralise Liverpool’s attacking threat.
Mourinho did not disappoint.
Liverpool managed to come away from the impressive Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with all three points, though, and their ninth 1-0 victory of the season.
While Spurs had the better chances in the second half, with Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso missing sitters, a victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men was deserved on the balance of play.
A clever touch and finish by Roberto Firmino in the 37th minute was all that separated the two sides at the end of the 90 minutes, but Liverpool will be disappointed they didn’t put the game to bed in the first half, when they dominated and controlled the game thoroughly.
With this victory, Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 38 league games – the equivalent of a full season – and they seem to have an answer for every question thrown at them on the football pitch.
With fierce rivals Manchester United and Wolves their next two fixtures, however, Klopp will know even with a 14-point lead over they cannot afford to take their eyes off the ball just yet.
Liverpool are firm favorites to be crowned champions of England come May, but they will know nothing can be taken for granted in the league and rightly so.
