Serie A side AS Roma are looking to strengthen their defence and may make a swoop for Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho, alongside a bid for Lyon’s Samuel Umtiti, claim Calciomercato.
Sakho, who arrived at Anfield two years ago, is wanted by Roma to plug the huge gap left by the departed Alessandro Romagnoli, who was sold to AC Milan for £20m last week.
The left-footed defender didn’t start the Anfield club’s opening game of the 2015-16 Premier League season last weekend, but did make 15 starts in the league during the last campaign, and Brendan Rodgers, whose Reds will be competing in four competitions this term, could rotate him with Dejan Lovren.
Calciomercato claim that Roma boss Rudi Garcia is confident that he can capture both Sakho and his fellow Frenchman Umtiti, however with the former still in Rodgers’ plans and the latter already having been the subject of rejected bids by his club, the Italian outfit could face an uphill battle.
Liverpool would still have cover at centre-back if Sakho were to leave in the shape of Kolo Toure, but many would argue that the France international should be first choice alongside Martin Skrtel, so he’d be a big loss to the Reds.
