Benitez opts out of Moreno deal

Real Madrid turned down a deadline day offer from Liverpool to take left-back Alberto Moreno as a replacement for Fabio Coentrao, as per the Express via AS.

The report states that former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez at one stage was trying to push through a deal that would bring the former Sevilla player back to Spain.

Moreno, who has failed to start a game under Brendan Rodgers this season, has fallen down the pecking order this year, with former Charlton Athletic starlet Joe Gomez being preferred to the Spanish youngster against Stoke City, Bournemouth, Arsenal and West Ham United.

Rumours have circulated all summer about Moreno’s availability, with reports that both Barcelona and Roma had been keeping an eye on the defender.

Yet AS claim that Benitez, who led Liverpool to a fifth Champions League triumph in 2005, opted to pull the plug on any deal going ahead, and thus deciding to stick with the options he had at his disposal, leaving Moreno to fight for his place on Merseyside.
