Jamie Carragher believes it is vital that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp signs least one wide player in January.
The former Borussia Dortmund boss was again left frustrated after a late Sadio Mane equaliser in yesterday’s Super Sunday clash meant Southampton left Anfield with just a point.
The home side were unable to hold on after Christian Benteke had given Liverpool the lead with a well-taken header.
And Carragher, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, thinks they lack a cutting edge going forward.
“There are no wide players in the squad, there are not enough chances being created,” said Carragher on Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw.
Liverpool dominated possession but never really looked like causing the Southampton back line any problems, and Carragher thinks Klopp’s side must up the tempo if they are going to be challenging that elusive top four spot at the end of the season.
“The football has not been quick and fast, it’s been slow and predictable, they are not creating chances,” the 37-year-old said.
So boring, nothing happens. No aggression.
Carragher, who made over 700 appearances for the Reds, believes Klopp has a lot of work to do.
“There are some problems with that’s squad in terms of the quality and the balance,” he continued.
That is Jurgen Klopp’s problem now. Maybe he will address that in January but there are four centre-forwards and three or four number 10’s with no wide players.
Liverpool host struggling Bournemouth in the quarter-final of the League Cup on Wednesday.
The Reds defeated Eddie Howe’s side at Anfield in their first home game of the campaign thanks to a Christian Benteke goal.
A similar scoreline would be a timely one for Klopp, who will be desperate to register his first win as Liverpool’s manager.
