If Van Dijk’s withdrawal from the Dutch squad also causes him to miss Liverpool’s clash with Palace it will be a massive blow to Jurgen Klopp. Whilst Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez are capable deputies, there is no doubting that Van Dijk’s presence and confidence at the back is a huge asset to the club.
The centre-back is one of the leading candidates to win the Ballon d’Or this year and has been in excellent form this season for the Reds, who are currently unbeaten. With Joe Gomez also struggling with a swollen knee, Klopp may be forced into deploying Fabinho at centre-back – a decision he had to make on multiple occasions last season.
