Curtis Jones was “ill for three days” before the Merseyside Derby

On Sunday afternoon, Curtis Jones wrote himself into the folklore of the Merseyside Derby as he scored a stunning goal to help a much-changed Liverpool side defeat Everton at Anfield in the FA Cup third round.

Jones scored the only goal of the game – a spectacular curling effort from the edge of the box – to round off an impressive display as he was named as the Man of the Match on just his fifth first-team appearance for the Reds.

Whilst Jones earned plenty of praise for his performance in the game, it has been revealed that the teenager had been unwell before the match took place.

As revealed onInside Anfield: LFC v Everton (11:06), Jones told an LFC TV presenter before his interview that he’d been “ill for three days” before the game, and his voice certainly backed up that claim as he sounded rather hoarse.

For Jones to play so well that he was named as the Man of the Match despite being surrounded by international footballers such as Joe Gomez, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi is a testament to him. The fact that he did it despite being not feeling 100%, too, should earn him even more plaudits.

Liverpool have suffered injuries to the likes of Fabinho, Naby Keita and James Milner in recent weeks, thus reducing the number of midfield options that Jurgen Klopp has available to him.

Jones’ display on Sunday should, in my opinion, put him in the mix of getting some more first-team action in recent weeks, and personally, I would not be at all concerned or annoyed if Klopp selected him in any of the upcoming Premier League fixtures that Liverpool have in the next few weeks.
