Dejan Lovren denies perjury charges in Croatia

Dejan Lovren has denied a charge of perjury in his home country of Croatia over evidence given in the corruption trial of former Dinamo Zagreb executive director Sdravko Mamic.

The defender has denied any criminal wrongdoing in the trial, which also involves Real Madrid star Luka Modric.

In a statement on his Instagram, Lovren stated that:

With indignation, I dismiss all accusations.

To anyone who wants to ruin my reputation and the reputation of my family, I say it will not succeed.

I did not commit any criminal offence. I am proud of my life, every step of my life, everything that my family and I have created.

Lovren was a key member of the Croatian squad that made it all the way to the World Cup final and said he learned about the charge made against him after a training session.

The Croatian left Dinamo in 2010 to join Lyon, before moving to Southampton and then Liverpool.

Mamic was found guilty of taking money from transfer fees from several star players sold by Dinamo Zagreb in his spell at the club.

Luka Modric has found himself in hot water as well, also being charged with perjury in regards to statements given about his move from Dinamo to Spurs back in 2008.
